Opening anything with a lock when you do not have the key or the code is a nightmare. Thankfully, most locksmiths know how to open things for you. If you would like some help with opening locks yourself, there are some lock openers and tools that can help. They are similar to the same tools and openers a locksmith uses, so you know that these are safe for just about any lock you have. The following types of lock openers, and how they work, will help you the next time you need to get into something that is locked.
Automotive Lock Picks
If you have a car that is old enough to have key locks in the doors, then you can use these automotive lock picks. It will take a little practice to feel your way around the interior of the lock before you can effectively pick it. Therefore, it is a good idea to buy this set of picks, have your key outside of the vehicle, and lock your doors so that you can practice with the picks.
Wedges and Pry Bars
Next to lock picks, these are your first line of defense for opening doors. All wedges and pry bars accomplish the same thing. They create an opening between the door and the surface where the closed door comes to rest. Then you should be able to sneak in a tool to push, pull, or grab the lock button to unlock things. They also help with creating an opening so that you can press on the buttons of a keypad.
Electronic and Keyless Entry Picks
This type of lock opener comes with a "decoder". The decoder registers the code needed to unlock a safe, a security door handle, or a keyless car door. Once the decoder works its magic, the next key-shaped pick is able to turn the tumblers inside and unlock the lock when the "key" is pressed or held up to the keyless lock.
Apps
More and more lock manufacturers are making it possible to unlock things with your smartphone using an app. If you installed such a lock on your front or back door, you can just download the app and get it to work with the lock to unlock the door(s). This step is generally done when the locks are initially installed, but if you skipped that step then, you can still do it now. All you need is the lock's manufacturer name and lock item or style number to open the app and program it to open your door(s).
